A needle may be lost in a haystack. But however enormous Earth is, we never believed that an aeroplane could just vanish from the face of the planet! I have been following the news since the 209-foot-long Boeing 777 went missing on 8 March 2014 enroute from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Beijing Capital International Airport. This incident is almost like a sci-fi movie! Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 last made contact with air traffic control less than an hour after take-off carrying 12 crew members and 227 passengers. With no distress call, no sign of wreckage and very few answers, the disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines plane is turning into one of the biggest aviation mysteries since Amelia Earhart vanished over the Pacific Ocean in 1937. Popular TV shows like “Lost,” or movies like “Alive” or “Castaway,” where people survive a plane crash only to have the rest of the world give up on them, just feed the curiosity. Reportedly the largest joint search and rescue effort in the history of search parties had been launched on the same day. But still no trace, not even debris from a crash, has been found. The logical conjectures are leaving questions behind. That is why conspirators have started spinning stories about the ‘The Chronicles of the Missing Plane’! Here are the top 10 theories about the ‘Lost Plane’, which are hilarious, dark and controversial:
#10: COHERENT EXPLANATIONS!
Most sensible people look for elucidating theories. US investigators believe that after air traffic control lost contact, a satellite had continued to receive “pings” from the aircraft for several hours. This data showed that the aircraft’s ACARS and transponder had been switched off and the radar data indicated that the aircraft’s movements were consistent with the deliberate action of someone on the plane. The loss of transponders and communications makes perfect sense in case of an electrical fire because the first response in this case is to pull the main busses and restore circuits one by one until the bad one has been isolated. When the busses are pulled, the plane goes silent and would stop showing on the radar. Perhaps it was a serious event and the flight crew was occupied with controlling the plane and trying to fight the fire. Given the timeline, the other possibility could be that one of the front landing gear tires got overheated, blew on takeoff and started burning slowly. The flight crew might have been overcome by smoke and the plane continued on the heading, probably on autopilot, until it ran out of fuel or the fire destroyed the control surfaces and it crashed. A similar misfortune of a DC-8 took place in Nigeria on 11th of July 1991. But then, where is the debris? Perhaps a bomb on board, or some type of failure with the engines or airframe could have caused the plane to explode. But if that were the case, debris would have been found in the spot where the transponder went off. Another rational theory could be slow or sudden decompression. This would cause a loss of oxygen, killing everyone on board. If the plane depressurized and killed its occupants, which happened on golfer Payne Stewart’s business jet in 1999, that would explain the silence from crew and passengers. But aviation experts say in that case, the plane should have kept flying automatically toward Beijing and been visible on radar. Then why wasn’t it?
Another cogent conjecture is a terrorist hijacking! This theory was prominent early on after it was discovered that two Iranians on board were traveling on stolen passports. However, investigators haven’t found anything linking either to terror groups. It could be a hijacking gone wrong which caused the plane to hurtle and crash. But again, no debris was found. Some recalled when in 1969, then North Korean dictator Kim Il-sung hijacked a flight and had it flown to Pyongyang. The plane had enough fuel to fly to North Korea and remain within cell phone range, explaining the fact passengers’ phones were still ringing. Maybe some real life James Bond villain has the plane and plans to load it with jet fuel and explosives and use it as a missile in the future. Another theory suggests that the hijackers carefully planned to avoid detection in the Indian Airspace by flying close enough to SIA68 over the Bay of Bengal so that it showed up as a single blip on the radar. But why go to all the trouble of stealing a commercial jet? A cargo plane would be easier to steal. And as of yet, no credible group has taken credit for the disappearance and intelligence agencies say they haven’t noticed any chatter in terrorist circles regarding the jet.
#8: SHOOTDOWN (IN THE AIR-WALA)!
The title rhymes with the name of a bollywood movie ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’. Herein ‘air-wala’ means air related. Civilian aircrafts have been unintentionally shot down by a country’s military like an Iran Air flight was accidently shot down by US Navy missile cruiser in 1988, killing all 290 on board. In an analogous incident in 1983, a Korean Air Lines flight was shot down by a Russian fighter jet. Similarly, Flight 370 may have been hijacked by a terrorist group and they may have been taking it towards the Middle East. In order to do so, it would have to pass through the Chinese Air Space. It might have shown up on their radar, and the Chinese Air Force could have inadvertently shot it down. Later, they may have realized their blunder but owning up to such an incident is ignominious and at the same time it could cause a rift between China and Malaysia. So the Chinese government may have hush-hushed the entire rumpus by cleaning up the mess, literally. Although so far, there is no evidence that Flight 370 was brought down by a government entity.
#7: PILOT GONE CRAZY!
The way several key communication and tracking devices in the cockpit were disabled at different times places suspicion on the pilots. The idea of pilots using a plane to commit suicide is scary but not unprecedented. The Silk Air crash in 1997 and the Egypt Air crash in 1999 are both believed to have been the result of deliberate actions by pilots. Crashing a plane in the place where it would be nearly impossible to find would make the pilot’s plot difficult to uncover and allow him to retain some dignity. Avoidance of radar is explained with suggestions that 53-year-old Zaharie Ahmad Shah, the pilot, took a circuitous route on his way to a deep spot in the Indian Ocean. But someone taking such pains to divert the plane does not fit the pattern of past cases mentioned above. Others suggest that Flight 370’s pilot pulled off a plan to steal the Boeing 777 to use it later in a 9/11-style terrorist attack. A key point of this theory includes the pilot intentionally depressurizing the cabin and ascending to 45,000 feet in order to kill the passengers. Then he landed somewhere close and will soon re-outfit the plane. Is such a farfetched scheme possible?
#6: THE NUMBER 37!
One of the theories circulating online is fixated on the numerical coincidences found within the flights disappearance. Flight 370 disappeared just a couple of hours after 3/7(or March 7th) finished and 8th March began. It was reportedly traveling 3,700km. It flew at an altitude of 37,000 feet when it was last reported using flight tracking software. Luigia Maraldi, age 37, was one of the individuals whose passport was stolen. Malaysian Airlines is one of Asia’s largest, flying nearly 37,000 passengers daily. As of today, we are beginning the 37th month since the Fukushima tragedy, which is located on the 37th degree and initially caused 37 injuries at the plant. Whoa! That is something, eh?
#5: FUTURISTIC SPECULATION!
The plane never crashed — it’s just invisible! In a twist straight out of the “Star Wars” saga, some theorists believe that Flight 370 deployed electronic weaponry and cloaking devices that simply hid it from radar detection. Onboard were 20 employees from Freescale Semiconductor, a Texas-based technology firm, which develops components for hi-tech weapons systems and aircraft navigation among other things. Radar-blocking capabilities of some of the aeronautical hardware technology produced by Freescale have been linked with the disappearance of the plane. Some are considering that MH370 was blown up by a micro nuclear bomb which created a black hole of magnetic forces vaporizing the whole jetliner! Others are considering that maybe there was something valuable in the cargo, like a time travel device, which adventitiously started working and the plane disappeared from 2014 and appeared in some other year! Maybe the U.F.O.s that people claim to site are actually aeroplanes from the future. Ever thought about that?
#4: THE ILLUMINATI INVOLVEMENT!
Supposedly, a top secret organization called Illuminati, exists which believes in a totalitarian one-world government. It plans all major events that baffle and terrify the general public so as to keep them under control. The 9/11 seems to have been planned centuries ago while its first premonition was in The Holy Bible and Nostradamus! Allegedly, the Illuminati are behind this disappearance as this seemed to have been a planned conspiracy! Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was the 404th 777 Boeing produced. An HTTP 404 error means “not found”, which in this case is oddly appropriate for the status of the aircraft. Is it just a coincidence? Conspirators surely know how to connect distant facts and merge it with the truth!
#3: CASTE AWAY!
How do you explain a modern airplane with state-of-the-art technology vanishing? Officially, you can’t. No one can so far. Unofficially, though? You reference “Lost.” The uncanny similarities between the TV show and the mystery surrounding Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 are being noted with increasing frequency online. New indications that the plane was heading in the direction of the relatively uninhabited Andaman Islands off of which an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 on the Richter scale was reported on Friday. Maybe the plane crashed on an unidentified piece of land and no one has been able to trace it yet. An interesting point to be noted is that it was a Boeing 777 that disappeared over the Pacific in the series and so is MH370! They all maybe deemed dead but actually are alive and stuck somewhere unknown where they could be hunted by someone or something sinister(the aborigines?) ! It’s quite disturbing that the plot of LOST is becoming a plausible explanation for the whole flight. There’s a very serious difference between the “Lost” plane and this lost plane, specifically the lives of the people onboard. The only way MH370 is like the show “Lost” is that it’s getting big ratings and almost nobody will like the way it ends.
The plane could have simply disappeared into an outwardly portal! A portal is a doorway, gate, or other entrance, especially a large and imposing one, through which you may be able to travel from one place to another in a moment or enter a parallel universe or an alternate dimension! Those fascinated with such conspiracies are considering that a new ‘Bermuda triangle’ area must have emerged in the area where the flight lost contact in air or in the ocean upon which it had been flying. Or the plane could have gone through to an alternate dimension or slid into a parallel universe through a portal! It is missing in our world but the crew and passengers may have safely landed in the other world! But such stories never end well… “You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension. A dimension of sound. A dimension of sight. A dimension of mind. You’re moving into a land of both shadow and substance of things and ideas. You’ve just crossed over into… The Twilight Zone,” an excerpt from The Twilight Zone.
#1: ALIENS, DUH!
Since no solid proof has emerged after many weeks of the disappearance of the gargantuan Boeing 777, the most plausible explanation is ‘alien abduction’! A report from a wacky news channel was released last week suggesting extraterrestrials had successfully saved the plane from crashing by taking it aboard their spaceship when it was suffering hydraulic failure and was at risk of imminent destruction. According to this report, radar pictures confirm the appearance of alien craft and the sudden disappearance of Flight 370. Many believe that aliens have been abducting ships and planes in the Bermuda Triangle for as long as civilized people have been sailing those seas. Could the aliens have decided to abduct yet another plane form a different place? The social media is abuzz with this theory as not even the super efficient Satellites were able to detect any trace of the missing plane. The alien abduction theory now holds more weight as the Chinese media claimed that some passengers’ mobile phones were ringing when their relatives called while the American spy satellite too showed no sign of a mid-air explosion in its image. Is it already time for ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’?
