Circuit Board Shielding: An Overview

Article by ,

Printed circuit boards help mechanically support and electrically connect all the various components of an electronic device. It consists of an electronic circuit that consists of thin strips of conducting material, like copper. These strips are etched from a layer that is fixed to a flat insulating sheet – which is called a printed circuit board. All integrated circuits and components are then attached to this. If an electronic device is not working at its fullest, or is malfunctioning, one of the first things to check is the printed circuit board.
Another common problem that can result in electronic devices going haywire is because of electromagnetic interference, or EMI. Electromagnetic waves that are emitted from various devices like televisions and radios can negatively affect other electronic devices. Every wireless system will receive and transmit certain signals and waves. The waves emitted can affect your electronic device, and can corrupt the device, rendering it unusable. Therefore, it is important to make sure that your device is well shielded to ensure that the device works perfectly.

Most of today’s wireless devices have to deal with electromagnetic radiation from two sources – radio frequency, or RF, that transmits the signal, and the internal digital circuits. One challenge that is faced while designing an electronic device is to create a circuit board that gives out minimal emissions. The next step is to shield the sensitive circuit board to prevent radiation, and to protect the circuit board from harmful emissions from other devices.

Circuit board shields are made of a variety of materials, from stainless steel, to conductive foams and metal films. These shields can provide maximum shielding effectiveness if paired with electrically conductive interfaces. For example, metal gaskets are often used to shield as much of the enclosure as possible, by producing a conductive barrier and preventing any EMI from leaking out of the circuit board. An EMI shield should be a sealed container with no opening. However, this isn’t possible in the practical world, which means that EMI can leak through certain openings in the container. Therefore, additional measures must be taken to prevent such leakages.

There are multiple factors that determine the efficacy of electromagnetic shields. The efficacy depends, mainly, on three properties of the shielding material – conductivity, permeability, and thickness. Two other factors that are taken into consideration are airflow and mechanical strength. Good quality shields must have holes in their structures to allow air to flow through the circuit, helping cut down the build-up of heat within the circuit.
