How many kinds of EMI shielding are there?

Article by ,

EMI degrades the performance of the circuit and may even bring its functioning to a standstill altogether. According to the Wikipedia, “Electromagnetic shielding is the practice of reducing the electromagnetic field in a space by blocking the field with barriers made of conductive or magnetic materials.” It further adds that shieldings which block radio frequency electromagnetic radiation are known as RF shieldings. EMI shields are mechanical devices such as flat sheets. When such items are put around electrical devices, the interference is done away with. Not only will this prevent the device from generating interference (and affecting other units) but will also make sure that the device doesn’t pick up interference from outside. The world we live in is an increasingly wireless one, isn’t it? We can hardly find anyone without a mobile phone. Or a wifi. This has eventually paved the way for the air to be congested with teeming wireless signals.

Electromagnetic interface or the popularly known as EMI works hand in hand with the manufacturing and designing of an electronic device. It is important to note that electronic radiation shapes an electronic circuit. So a fault in the electromagnetic interface will certainly show up in the gadget too. Hence, it should be avoided.

While television sets and mobile phones are manufacted, uncovering of electromagnetic interference is undeniably crucial. Signal interruptions will unsurprisingly follow when the EMI stops running. This works not only for mobile phones and television sets but also for military equipment, public transport, nuclear power plants and heart monitors. So these devices are also in need of urgent EMI shielding.

EMI shielding is held accountable for making the gadget work. But we have different varieties of shielding. Though it is up to the designers and the engineers, EMI shielding depends upon the equipment to be produced as well. So let’s discuss the six types of electromagnetic interface shielding.

First, we have the shielding laminate. An opaque piece put right with metal foils protects the given device. Besides, filters are employed for the sake of shielding. They are adept in discriminating against undesired sound disturbances. In addition, filters can be made to convert those disturbances into a much more serviceable form.

The remaining four kinds of EMI shielding include shielded housings, shielded lines, shielded walls and wave absorbers. Shielded housings make use of sheet metal, foam and foil. Shielded lines are designed as EMC filters or electrical lines. This helps in doing away with invasion of electromagnets. Internally, this sort of shielding is metal covered or metal coated.

Shielded walls strive to get rid of EMI in radio frequencies. The walls, typically the entire room, is made up of protective metals. The last category of EMI shielding, known as the wave absorbers, is created from discs or foam materials. It acts as a magnet for all the EMI.

So how does one usually choose? How would you know which among the six would work for you? As you can see, EMI shieldings vary in terms of material, design, shape as well as size and this would help you decide which could be the right option
