The cornerstone of manufacturing process- effective power transmission system

There is no doubt that power transmission system forms the backbone of almost every industrial process. Mechanical propulsion system drives assembly lines, which are common method for mass production of every product including automobiles to consumer goods. Liquids are moved in chemical processes by pumps that make gasoline, diesel, heating oil, and plastics and specialty chemicals. Compressors can be found in the back of every refrigerator, in the homes of most of the people, so that the refrigeration cycle can prevent their food from getting spoilt. All the commercial appliances, farm equipment, and business equipment use power transmission system in order to run businesses which in turn can make our lives easy to live and comfortable.

Power transmission system can be divided into sub-systems, motors, drive systems and bearings. Let us examine each sub-system-

  1. Motors that drive industry

Motors are omnipresent in the industries. Conversion of energy into any form, be it electrical, mechanical, hydro, steam or compressed air is the ultimate goal of most of the industries engaged in manufacturing. They are integral part of power transmission system, which is the only reason they are seen in every facet of life even outside the domain of manufacturing.

Even the air can be moved by using motors in the fans. Motor’s shaft can either be attached directly to the fan blades or a drive system, typically a belt can link power generated to the fan blade. Motor driven pumps are also important component when moving liquids.

Hence, we can say that motors are found everywhere from cars and refrigerators to industry and businesses.

  1. Powering mechanical drive systems

In a power transmission system, where the motors generate power, drive systems transfer that power to perform work. In other words, a motors clinical power is converted into linear motion by drive systems. This is the why, a motor is able to spin in a circle and at the same time is capable of providing power to run a conveyor belt in a straight line.

Direct coupling is the most simple drive system. Take a spinning motor shaft and weld fan blades onto the end to create a fan to move air. Centrifugal pumps’ impeller fans are directly coupled and sealed to contain liquid in order to drive shaft of the motor.

Belts and pulley systems are often used to transfer linear motion to a device that is not directly coupled to motor. It is based on the very concept that motor turns a pulley with a belt attached that runs to a series of pulleys and bushings all attached to other equipment. This is the way by which motor can drive multiple machines at the same time.

  1. The right bearings to maintain operations

Lubrication is the most important element that is needed to ensure smooth movement and power transmission as well as to reduce the load that friction will apply to materials, when heavy metal components are in motion. Bearings are the essential method to prevent any grinding against the metal, which can lead to destruction of machinery. They comprise of a set of concentric rings with ball bearings and lubricating fluid set between them. Bearings are capable of supporting heavy load in any direction depending on their configuration.

A work is accomplished more effectively with less down time provided that all the components of power transmission system are designed with integration in mind.
