It is a sad irony that our environment is both guarded and circuitously degenerated by its crusaders. Environmentalism, the ideology that relates with conservation of the environment and improvement of its degraded state has risen up more than ever in the past decade. It is an urgent need to instill a concern for the impact on the environment in our regular decision-making. However, it is not only observed generally, but also reported by researchers that people think negatively of environment activists. Even if they support environmentalism theoretically, they do not want to be associated with any environmentalists, and this dampens the likelihood of bringing any change to their attitude.
Figures show that people hold negative stereotypes of environmentalists and view them as conspicuously unconventional. Following are the reasons why these reformers are considered to be annoying.
10. LIE ABOUT STATISTICS
More often than not, environmentalists are known to make up theories and pass them as facts in order to make their point seem heavier to the opponents. They trick and deceive in the name of nature, and yet expect people to relate to their ideas. What can actually help these fabricators is to read a book once in a while. Staying updated on the researches that are being done, and there are quite a lot, would be more assistive to their agenda, and might win them a few supporters. Making up statistics or passing on words of mouth without confirming their authenticity is not only morally wrong but also makes one look bad.
9. FORCE THEIR IDEAS UPON YOU
Every coin has two faces, and neither is heavier than the other. Same goes for arguments. Environmentalists speak, but they do not listen. They talk about what is wrong with the world and how things should actually get done, but they do not care to know the story on the other side. Nobody is absolutely right but forcing one’s points on someone will only make them walk away. It is not a bad idea for them to keep mum for a moment and pause their ranting. Respecting the ideas that others have to offer instead of introducing random and eccentric ideas will help them gain support.
8. DON’T PRACTICE WHAT THEY PREACH
It is not unusual to see advocates not implementing their words in their actions. They deliver long condescending sermons about organic food and high priced energy efficient appliances while barely making any conscious and empirical effort to save the environment. One can hear a number of these people stressing on the necessity of carpooling, switching off unnecessary lights, reusing plastic bags and so on, yet studies prove that a majority of people refrain from bringing these ideas into practice on a daily basis. Al Gore’s stupendous home bills are a notorious example. It would be more impressive if instead of indulging in such hypocrisy, they implement their green living tips on themselves.
7. THEY POINT OUT THE PROBLEMS AND NOT OFFER SOLUTIONS
Nobody likes to be criticized on their actions unnecessarily and be constantly told what to do. Putting oneself in the opponents’ shoes leads to a civil and back and forth kind of a conversation, unlike a ridiculously one-sided discussion in which a person has to pretend to agree to every inconsiderate opinion just to make one shut up. It might be acutely generalizing to say that environmentalists fall into the latter category, but accurate nevertheless. Environmentalists judge the activities of our species in a condescending manner giving little thought to the necessity of our lifestyle. These reformers are avoided like plague, and seen as patronizing instead of thoughtful. They cannot solve issues by having only a basic knowledge of the idea behind sustainability. Instead of pestering people endlessly about everything that they are doing wrong, they can be realistic and work from there.
6. INTRODUCE ELITISM IN ENVIRONMENTALISM
Not everyone has the income to buy pricey gadgets and food items that contribute to energy preservation, and those who can turn into self-proclaimed environment ethos and look down on those who cannot afford their energy efficient luxuries. Elitism is a major influence on environmentalism and its impact on our society, since it gives rise to social inequities. Also, such over-privileged environmentalists do not actually contribute to their cause. Jevon’s paradox states that when efficiency of a device is high, its consumption increases, and energy is not saved at all.
5. PRIORITIZE GREEN MOVEMENT ABOVE ALL
Awarding the environment’s strengthening as the topmost priority – it definitely seems like a necessary step to revolutionize the Green Movement. However, it acts as a drawback in a number of cases, where environmentalists only tend to get in the way. In California, environmental ethos are trying to introduce a new era of scarcity, as they believe that unavailability of resources like water can help in reduction of the overall footprint of the area. They intend to cut down the use of already critical water levels to the amount sufficient for necessary use. To them, this aggressively militant notion is one of extreme fortune.
4. INTERPRET DE-DEVELOPMENT COLDLY
De-development is the pull back of economic growth, also known as recession. An environmentalist’s outlook on this does begin to exercise some reasonable ideas but also entertains extremes that are highly devastating and inconsiderate to certain sections of the society. He toys with ideas ranging from an absolute stay on population growth to limiting the consumption of necessary resources to a certain point.
3. WREAK HAVOC ON INDUSTRIES
The fundamental goal of environmentalism is demolition of industrial civilization. By raising issues that are not only insensitive to the growing need of jobs but also against economic growth, these reformers intentionally try to bring down businesses. Lloyd Carter, an environmental activist for the Great State of California, for instance, suggested to the state that farm productions in California should be ceased since most of the farmers there are not American citizens, in order to manage the water consumption. In this manner, one opinion can bring down a whole industry and its employees. Other than that, often the points raised by these activists are emotional instead of substantive and do not stand a chance to be implemented practically, like banning activities essential for the working of the world.
2. ACT IMMORALLY
Environmentalists have slowly grown to become dangerous and deadly in fashions that are against the existence of their own species – human beings. Many groups of reformers have introduced concepts like radical environmentalism, eco-terrorism, and anti-humanism, which function on the viewpoint that environmentalists are a cancer on the earth. We are considered to be an incorrigible race that endangers the natural order, and this has given rise to numerous crimes committed by prophets of anti-humanism like Malthus and Ehrlich. Eco-terrorism groups like ‘The Family’ are known for setting uncountable fires and burning properties worth $40 million from 1996 to 2001.
1. TURN ENVIRONMENTALISM INTO A TREND
The biggest reason why environmentalists are conceived to be pesky is that they have long since diverted from their original intensions. Environmentalism is now a trend that people feel like following because they find it ’interesting’ to save the planet. Among the younger ones, it has turned into a culture that they want to adopt because everybody else is doing so. Unless environmentalists realize what their aim is and how to go about it, their mission cannot attract the supporters it requires.
