Soda which can be defined as aerated sugar water is a big business in today’s world. The beverage may come in cheap prices but the damage caused by its consumption is quite expensive. It may seem to provide short term refreshment but the side effects from its consumption tend to stay for long. The attractive advertisements featuring handsome and beautiful models add to the temptation for the drink. The brands are leaving no strings unattached to attract the consumer to go for these tasty-unhealthy drinks. Here are 10 reasons to avoid the consumption of such slow poisons:
10. Undistributed fat
For many of us this became a reason for obesity and undistributed fat. Most afflicted country with obesity is US and soda is one of the contributing factors in this. The researchers have found out that consumption of these non-diet sodas leads to un-evenly dramatic increase in fat around skeletal muscles and liver, which in turn contributes to insulin resistance and diabetes. The consumption of such drinks lead to 11 percent increase in cholesterol when compared to people who consume other beverages like water and milk. The study revealed that people who consumed soda regularly for 6 months accumulated up to 140 percent fat around liver and up to 220 percent fat around skeletal muscles. An increase of 30 percent in triglyceride blood fats and other organ fat was also observed.
9. Caramel Cancer
According to the research by Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) the soft drinks contain a potential cancer causing compounds. These compounds are added to give the regular and diet sodas that characteristic shade of brown. The chemicals in question are potentially carcinogenic compounds called 4-methylimidazole (4-MEI) and 2-methylimidazole (2-MEI). These compounds if consumed in excess quantity can cause cancer and Pepsi and coke were tested to find 5 times the permissible for these carcinogenic compounds. Though the science isn’t conclusive but we can assume that chemicals carcinogenic to rodents will cause cancer in us too.
8. Accelerated Aging
The soda brands now add significant amount of phosphates for preservation. High level consumption of these phosphates increase the severity of complications related to old age. Chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular calcification and severe muscle and skin atrophy are some age-related health issues that come free with the consumption of refreshing sodas. “Soda is the caffeine delivery vehicle of choice for millions of people worldwide, but comes with phosphorous as a passenger” said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of the FASEB Journal.
7. Water Pollution

The artificial sweeteners used by the companies are indigestible by human beings and neither do waste-water treatment plants catch them before they find their way in waterways. In recent studies samples from water-treatment plants, rivers and lakes detected levels of acesulfame K, sucralose, and saccharin, all of which are used in diet sodas. Though the harm caused by the low level consumption of these compounds by humans is still not known, studies proof that sucralose interferes with the living and feeding cycle of certain organisms in rivers and lakes.

Soft drinks are emerging as the most significant dietary sources of tooth decay. People of all age are suffering from this hideous side effect of soda consumption. Acids and acidic sugar by-products in sodas soften tooth enamel which leads to formation of cavities. Initially the problem of sleeplessness was observed in older people. However situation is not alike now as many younger people are suffering from insomnia.
